Bathroom wall lights and vanity sconces — fixtures for either side of a mirror, above it, or along the wall. Bathroom lighting is the one place where getting the position right matters more than the fixture you choose.

Beside the mirror beats above it

A single light above a mirror casts shadows downward — under your eyes, your nose and your chin, which is exactly where you do not want them for shaving or makeup. A pair of sconces either side at face height fixes it: mount them at about 165 cm from the floor and 75–90 cm apart, which lights your face evenly from both sides. If the mirror is too narrow for a pair, mount one over the top and add light elsewhere in the room to fill the shadows.

IP ratings and zones

Bathrooms are divided into zones by distance from water. Zone 1 is directly above the bath or inside the shower and needs IP65. Zone 2 extends 60 cm around the bath, shower and basin and needs IP44 or better. Anything beyond that — most mirror and vanity positions — is outside the zones and a standard fixture is fine. Each product page states its IP rating; check it against where you intend to mount before you buy.

Finishes that survive a bathroom

Brass and gold suit warm tiles, travertine and terracotta, and unlacquered brass will patina in the humidity — which some people want and some do not. Black and gunmetal hold up well against white tile and marble. Opal and milk glass hide the bulb and give the softest, most flattering light of anything here. Chrome and nickel are the safest match for existing bathroom fittings.

Bulb colour

2700K–3000K. Warmer than 2700K makes white tile look yellow; cooler than 3000K makes skin look grey in the mirror. A high CRI bulb — 90 or above — is worth paying for in a bathroom, because it is the only room where you need to judge colour accurately on your own face.
