Pendant lights hanging over a kitchen island

How to Choose Pendant Lights for a Kitchen Island: Size, Spacing and Height

Updated October 2026

The short version: hang two pendants over an island up to about 6 feet long and three over a longer one. Space them about 30 inches apart, keep the outer ones at least 6 inches in from the ends, and hang the bottom of each shade 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. Then choose the shade by the light you want: glass to show off the bulb, opal or a dome to cut glare, metal or stone for a focused pool of light.

Glass pendant lights over a kitchen island

How many pendant lights over a kitchen island?

  • Island up to about 4 feet: one larger pendant, or two small ones.
  • Island about 5 to 6 feet: two pendants.
  • Island about 7 to 9 feet: three pendants.
  • Longer than that: three larger pendants, or four small ones.

Odd numbers, especially three, look balanced over a long island. Two works well over a shorter island or one with a sink or cooktop in the middle.

How far apart should island pendants be?

Measure the island, then space the pendants evenly so there is about 30 inches between the centers and at least 6 inches between the outer pendants and the ends of the island. Closer than that and the shades crowd each other; further apart and you get dark gaps on the countertop.

How high to hang pendants over an island

Hang the bottom of each shade 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. That keeps the light close to the work surface without blocking the view across the kitchen. In a kitchen with a very high ceiling, go to the upper end of that range and choose a larger shade so the pendants do not look lost.

What size pendant for a kitchen island?

  • Small, around 6 to 10 inches across: use three or more, good for narrow islands.
  • Medium, around 10 to 16 inches: use two or three, the most common choice.
  • Large, 16 inches and up: one or two make a statement on their own.

As a check, the pendants together should take up less than the island's length minus about a foot at each end.

Which shade gives the light you need?

  • Clear glass shows the bulb and sparkles; use a decorative filament bulb.
  • Amber or smoked glass warms the light, good for an island used for eating and drinks.
  • Opal glass and domes hide the bulb and cut glare for anyone sitting at the island.
  • Metal, stone and ceramic push the light down into a focused pool, the best task light for prep.

Bulbs and dimming

Use warm white, 2700K to 3000K, and put the pendants on a dimmer. Bright for cooking, low for dinner. Check each product page for the bulb type it takes.

Finishes that tie the kitchen together

Match the pendant metal to your faucet and cabinet hardware: black with black, brass and gold with brass, chrome with stainless. Mixing glass colors works best when the shapes match.
