Pot filler placement over a kitchen stove

Pot Filler Placement: Centered or Offset, Reach and Clearance

Updated October 2026

In most kitchens, center the pot filler over the cooktop. It lines up with the range hood, looks balanced, and on a standard 30 or 36 inch range the arm reaches both the front and back burners. Offset it when your range is 48 inches or wider and you cook mostly on one side, when a centered faucet would clash with the hood, an outlet or a backsplash feature, or when you simply want it closest to the burner you use for big pots.

Centered pot filler: pros and cons

  • Pro: symmetric with the hood and the range, which is the look most designers aim for.
  • Pro: one arm reaches every burner on a standard range.
  • Con: on a very wide range, the arm may not reach the outer burners.
  • Con: it sits in the middle of the backsplash, so it interrupts a tile pattern or a decorative panel.

Offset pot filler: pros and cons

  • Pro: you can place it right above the burner you fill pots on most, usually a large back burner.
  • Pro: leaves the center of the backsplash free for tile, a ledge or a hood feature.
  • Con: less symmetric, which can look unplanned if the rest of the kitchen is very formal.
  • Con: the arm may not reach the burners on the far side.

The reach test

Before you decide, measure from the wall to the center of the burners you fill pots on. The fully extended arm should reach them comfortably, and the folded arm should lie flat against the wall without touching the hood or the back of the range. Check the arm length on the product page of the pot filler you choose.

Height and hood clearance

The spout has to clear your tallest stock pot, and the arm has to swing without hitting the hood. Our guide to pot filler height and measurements covers the numbers.

Wall-mounted or deck-mounted placement

A wall-mounted pot filler sits in the backsplash above the range. A deck-mounted pot filler sits on the countertop beside the range, so it is always offset; place it on the side where you set down full pots. For the install itself, see how to install a pot filler.

Matching the pot filler to your kitchen

  • Match the finish to your kitchen faucet and cabinet hardware: black with black, brushed gold with brass hardware, chrome with stainless appliances.
  • Modern and Scandinavian kitchens: a slim arm and simple lever handles keep it quiet against a plain backsplash.
  • Traditional and farmhouse kitchens: cross handles and a bridge-style arm suit a range with a big hood.

Pros and cons of a pot filler over the stove

Over the stove, a pot filler saves carrying heavy pots of water from the sink and adds a finished, high-end look. On the other hand, it needs its own water line, it is used for little beyond filling pots, and it sits where grease splashes, so it needs regular cleaning.

Frequently asked questions

Should a pot filler be centered or offset?

Centered in most kitchens, for balance with the hood and reach to every burner. Offset on very wide ranges, or when you want it directly over the burner you use most.

Where should a pot filler be placed on a 48 inch range?

Often offset, over the side with the large burners you use for pasta and stock, because a centered arm may not reach the outer burners.

Can a pot filler go somewhere other than over the stove?

Yes. A deck-mounted pot filler can sit beside the range, and some people fit one over a prep sink or a coffee station.
