Selma is a 35 cm square of brushed stainless steel with one small window cut into it. Almost all of the object is bare metal; the image inside is deliberately small. That inversion is the whole idea. Most wall art fills its frame edge to edge and shouts, while Selma holds a single quiet image inside a wide field of steel and makes you walk closer.

Steel, not steel-effect

The panel is solid stainless steel, polished and then brushed, rather than a coated or printed lookalike. A sprayed metal finish dulls where light hits it and chips at the edges; stainless holds its tone and wipes clean with a damp cloth. The brushing runs in one direction, so the surface shifts from bright to shadow as you move past it and the panel never reads as flat. That is what keeps a largely empty square interesting on a wall.

Two compositions

Offset: the window sits high and left, off-centre. Restless and more graphic; it works best alone, where the asymmetry has room to do its job.

Centred: the window sits dead centre. Calmer and more formal; this is the one to repeat, in a pair or a grid, because the centred aperture lines up across multiple panels.

Each panel ships with a picture card fitted in the window.

Where it works

Selma suits a wall that already has enough going on: above a console in a hallway, beside a door, in the gap between a bookshelf and a corner. It is small and reflective rather than loud, so it reads as a considered object rather than a poster. The silver sits comfortably against white plaster, pale oak, concrete and black metal, and stays quiet next to warmer brass fittings rather than fighting them.

Common questions

Is this a picture frame I put my own photos in?
Not really. The window is small relative to the panel and the piece is designed as a finished object, with its picture card already fitted. Think of it as framed wall art rather than an empty frame waiting for a photograph.

Is the metal real?
Yes. Stainless steel throughout, finished by polishing and brushing rather than painting or coating.

Which one should I choose if I want more than one?
Centred. A pair or a grid of centred panels lines up cleanly; offset panels repeated start to look like a mistake rather than a decision.

How do I clean it?
A damp cloth, dried off. No polish or abrasive. Brushed stainless keeps its finish best when it is left alone.
