Glass pendant lights in clear, amber, opal, smoked and ribbed glass. Glass is the most variable material in lighting. The same bulb behind four different glasses gives four completely different rooms, so choose the glass before you choose the shape.

Which glass for which room

Clear glass shows the bulb, so the bulb becomes the decoration. Use a decorative filament bulb and expect sparkle and visible shadows rather than soft light. Best over a dining table where you want glitter, worst anywhere you sit directly below it.

Amber and smoked glass filter the light down to roughly candlelight. In a white or grey kitchen an amber pendant is often the only warm thing in the room, which is why it does so much work. Pair with a 2200–2700K bulb; anything cooler turns amber glass slightly green.

Opal and milk glass hide the bulb completely and glow evenly with no bright spot and no glare. The safest choice over a kitchen island, beside a bed, or anywhere people look up at the fixture.

Ribbed and fluted glass sits between the two: it breaks the filament into dozens of soft vertical highlights, so you get texture without hard glare.

Hanging height

75–90 cm from the tabletop to the bottom of the shade over a dining table or island. 50–60 cm above a bedside table. In a stairwell, hang so the bottom of the fixture sits level with the upper floor.

Cleaning

Glass shows dust faster than any other material, particularly above a hob. Let the bulb cool, then use a damp microfibre cloth and nothing else. Glass cleaner leaves streaks that show when the light is on. Ribbed glass needs a dry brush in the flutes.
