A canopy is the cover at the top of a light fixture that sits flat against the ceiling or wall. It hides the electrical box, the wire connections and the mounting bracket, and on a pendant it also holds the cord or rod that the light hangs from. It is usually a round or square cup of metal, about 4 to 6 inches across, in the same finish as the fixture.
What a light fixture canopy does
- Covers the electrical box and wiring, so no connections are exposed.
- Hides the mounting bracket (the crossbar or strap screwed to the box).
- Holds the pendant cord or rod, usually with a cord grip or a threaded fitting in the center.
- Finishes the look, matching the metal of the fixture.
Types of canopy
- Ceiling canopy: the round or square cover at the top of a pendant, chandelier or flush mount.
- Wall canopy or backplate: the plate a wall sconce mounts to.
- Sloped-ceiling canopy: a canopy with a swivel fitting so a pendant hangs straight on a vaulted ceiling.
- Multi-port canopy: a larger canopy that holds several pendant cords from one electrical box, for a cluster of lights.
What size canopy do you need?
A standard ceiling electrical box is about 4 inches across, so the canopy needs to be wider than that, which is why most canopies are 4.5 to 6 inches in diameter. Measure the hole or the painted outline around the box before buying a new light. If the canopy is smaller than the hole, you will see a gap.
How to cover a hole bigger than the canopy
- Ceiling medallion: a decorative ring that sits between the ceiling and the canopy and covers a larger hole or old paint marks.
- Canopy cover plate: a flat plate, wider than the canopy, in a matching finish.
- Patch and paint the ceiling so the new canopy covers the hole.
Canopy, ceiling plate or medallion: what is the difference?
The canopy is part of the light fixture and covers the box. A ceiling plate is a plain flat cover, often used to close up a box with no light. A medallion is a decorative ring, separate from the fixture, that sits behind the canopy.
Do plug-in pendants have a canopy?
Some do, as a decorative cover for the ceiling hook. Because a plug-in pendant has no electrical box, the canopy only hides the hook and the cord. See our plug in pendant lights.
Frequently asked questions
What is the canopy on a light fixture?
The cover at the top of the fixture that sits against the ceiling or wall and hides the electrical box and wiring.
Can I replace just the canopy on a light?
Often, yes. Replacement canopies are sold separately, but the center hole and mounting screws have to match your fixture.
How do I remove a light fixture canopy?
Turn off the power at the breaker. Then loosen the decorative nut or the screws on the side of the canopy and slide it down the cord or rod.
Why is my canopy not flush with the ceiling?
Usually the electrical box sits too deep or too proud of the ceiling, or the wires are bunched behind the canopy. Adjusting the mounting bracket screws normally fixes it.
