A pendant is the easiest way to make a bathroom feel less like a utility room. Hung beside a mirror or over a vanity, it adds soft, flattering light at face height, and the shade becomes part of the decor. This collection gathers the pendants that suit a bathroom: glass shades that wipe clean, plus solid stone and ceramic.

Where to hang a pendant in a bathroom

The two best spots are on either side of the mirror and centered over the vanity. A pair of pendants beside the mirror light your face evenly from both sides, without the shadows a single overhead light casts under your eyes and chin. Hang them so the bottom of the shade sits around eye level, roughly 60 to 66 inches from the floor, just outside the edges of the mirror. Where people walk underneath, a common guideline is to keep the bottom of the shade at least 7 feet above the floor.

Keep pendants away from the tub and shower

In the US, the National Electrical Code does not allow hanging fixtures within 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically of the top of a bathtub rim or shower threshold. A pendant over a freestanding tub only works in a room with a very high ceiling. Any fixture in a bathroom should also be suitable for damp locations. Check the details of each pendant, and have a licensed electrician do the install, since local codes vary.

Choosing a shade

Glass is the most practical shade in a bathroom because it wipes clean and humidity does not harm it. Opal and frosted glass spread a soft light, while clear glass shows off the bulb. Look at Astrid, Millay, Rona and Mieke. For something with more weight, Vidar has a stone shade and Vanja a green ceramic one. See all glass pendant lights, or pair a pendant with bathroom sconces.

Pendants with a planter

The bathroom is often the most humid room in the house, and many houseplants like that. Planter pendants such as Lagerfeld, Wren and Gyda combine a light with a pot for a trailing plant. Pick a plant that copes with low light, such as pothos.

Can you hang a pendant light over a bathtub?

Usually not. US code keeps hanging fixtures out of the zone 3 feet out from and 8 feet above the tub rim, so you would need a very high ceiling. Ask your electrician what your local code allows.

How high should a bathroom pendant hang?

Beside a mirror, around eye level, about 60 to 66 inches to the bottom of the shade. In walkways, keep the bottom of the shade at least 7 feet above the floor.

Do bathroom pendants need to be damp rated?
