A plug-in wall sconce gives you the look of a wall light without any wiring. Each one has a cord that plugs into an ordinary outlet: screw the mounting plate to the wall, plug it in and switch it on. That makes plug-in sconces the go-to wall light for renters, for bedrooms where the wall box is in the wrong place, and for anyone who wants a light up tonight instead of after an electrician's visit.
How a plug-in sconce works
A plug-in sconce has the same parts as a hardwired one, plus a power cord running from the fixture down to the outlet. Because it does not connect to a wall switch, check where its own switch sits. Aleah has its switch on the cord, and Revna has a knob switch and a 3 m (about 10 ft) cord.
Hiding the cord
The cord is the one thing that gives a plug-in sconce away, and there are three common fixes. A paintable cord cover, a slim channel that runs from the sconce to the outlet, disappears once you paint it the wall color. A cord that hangs straight down on purpose can look like part of the design. Or mount the sconce right above the outlet, or behind a nightstand or headboard, so most of the cord is out of sight.

Swing arms for reading

Plug-in or hardwired: some come as both
Marit, Anneke and Adelborg are sold in a plug-in version and a hardwired version. Pick plug-in for a rental, and hardwired when you can run wiring to a wall box. The look is the same either way.

No. You mount the plate with screws and plug the cord into an outlet.
Can I use a plug-in sconce in a rental?
Yes. You leave a couple of small screw holes, which are usually easy to fill when you move out.
How do I hide the cord?
Use a paintable cord cover, mount the sconce right above the outlet, or tuck the cord behind furniture.
What if I want no cord at all?
